Am I not feeling festive because I haven’t been listening to my Christmas playlists? Or am I not listening to my Christmas playlists because I’m not feeling festive? 🤔
Notes
It took a few hours of fiddling, but I eventually managed to get Pi-hole + Unbound DNS + Tailscale to play nicely together in my homelab, letting me use my own DNS no matter which network I’m connected to
It’s the annual “Chris is getting up a silly o’clock just to maximise points in Advent of Code” season. 5:25am today, and there were already 3 people on the work leaderboard who had started ahead of me…
I have an itch to revive my old hobby blog, largely for photos, maybe with the odd longform text. I don’t think 11ty is the right tool for this one, even though I already have an 11ty-powered photoblog. Something hosted, where I can easily post from my phone. So, internet - where’s good?
Fudgesicles. I’ve lost the original SVG for a site logo. That’s mildly inconvenient.
I went through the faff of setting up a self-hosted Ghost instance a few days ago, then realised I’m probably never going to use it. Ah well, it was a learning exercise at least
Tonight’s bit of housekeeping done: Migrated my password manager off a Raspberry Pi, and on to something a little more robust
Spent the whole day trying to unfuck my home office, so it’s less cluttered and stress-inducing. 2 whole bin bags of stuff removed; it’s better, but still a mess. It’ll have to be an ongoing process
I’m considering reinstalling my desktop again, using everything I learned installing Arch on my laptop. I only really just finished getting the desktop “just so”.
It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me.
Nevertheless, he purchased yet another side-project domain name…
Relatedly, if anyone has PDF scans of these 2 issues of White Dwarf that they could send my way (or knows where to find them), I would be grateful:
- Issue 235 (July 1999)
- Issue 242 (Feb 2000)
Me: I’m going to spend my afternoon building models.
Also me: But what if, instead, I setup a new document management system and started archiving old magazine issues into a searchable database?
Checkmate, relaxation.
Just moved some APIs I run out of Azure and onto my home server. The networking was a PITA, but now DNS has settled, everything is running fast and stable 🤓
OK, the basic posting API is implemented. Now I just need to create a suitable client 🫠
Test post from a micropub endpoint!
One of my favourite “fun” features of KDE is shaking the mouse to enlarge the cursor. Shake enough and the cursor will about near fill the screen, which is ridiculous, but makes it easy to find when you’ve lost track of it. It’s silly, fun, and useful!
Look, I don’t care. I’m not joining your Discord.
I dug out an attempted Warhammer 40K project from a few years back, as the video with James the Battle Report Army Painter sparked a bit of inspiration. I’ve stripped 2(!) layers of primer off the bits I’m reusing, and I’m hoping to crack on with them at the weekend, once I’ve done the repairs.
Another night, another site moved. This time it’s moving my photo blog off of Netlify.
I just got to set a server rule which responds to a particular request with a HTTP 410. How delightfully obscure! 😅
If you’re reading this, then following on from yesterday’s image migration, I’ve successfully migrated the hosting of the rest of my blog front end to Bunny.Net 🎉
I’ve only had a new domain active for a couple of hours, and already it’s swarming with crawlers trying to find sensitive files. /.git/config seems to be the most common they’re trying, with /.env not that far behind.
Be careful with what you deploy, folks!
1st step of fixing my blog is done; image hosting has been migrated over to bunny.net Storage + CDN. Whole thing was a breeze; 6.5GB of images transferred in minutes, and basically no DNS wait time. Now to fix my backend services…
Trying to do some late spring cleaning, as my office is a right state. Stage 1 is mostly complete; I got a bunch of boxes moved out the room, freeing up floor space. It’s mostly just clutter on surfaces to deal with now…
Does anyone have any recommendations for a PDF management app? Preferably one that can use metadata to help organise files. I’ve tried Calibre, and while it would work for my purposes, I’m not a fan of the UI.
